History
Almere is a young city in the province of Flevoland. The first residents came to the new housing estates, built on the reclaimed southern Flevopolder, in 1976. The city grew rapidly due to the housing shortage in Amsterdam and other parts of the Netherlands. More than 220,000 people now live there. Almere has officially been a municipality since 1984 and is known for its modern architecture, water and green structure and pioneering mentality.
Main milestones:
- 1976: first residents in Almere Haven.
- 1984: city receives official municipality status.
- 2006: establishment of the city centre with shopping centre and cultural facilities.
